The House of Representatives has passed for second reading a bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to limit presidential immunity and remove immunity for the vice president, governors, and their deputies to enhance accountability in public office. Sponsored by Solomon Bob (PDP, Rivers), the bill aims to curb corruption and impunity.
It was among 42 constitutional amendment bills passed for second reading, covering devolution of powers, institutional strengthening, state creation, traditional institutions, fundamental rights, and local government. House Leader Hon Julius Ihonvbere moved the motion.
The House also advanced a bill mandating public disclosure of audit reports at federal and state levels. Another bill proposing the separation of the offices of Attorney General and Minister/Commissioner of Justice also passed second reading.
Deputy Speaker Hon Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, put the bills to a voice vote, with lawmakers overwhelmingly supporting them. The bills were referred to the House Committee on Constitution Review for further consideration.
